For my mother
Young at heart,
Dancing free,
Natural rhythm,
Wide strides,
Up in the air
To each primitive beat,
Dionysian in sprit,
Lover of fine wine,
Innagaddadavida,
And freshwater pearls at
Cocktail parties you donned.
Life of the party where
Warmth and charm you exuded.
Well-loved and sought by your friends,
For your jovial exterior,
No one would know
The complexity of your soul,
Or that one side of you
Mean spirited and often cruel,
Locked away from the world
For no one to see,
No one that is,
Except for your family.
The pain of your childhood
Was locked inside of you,
Hidden from the world,
Who would ever believe that
This Dionysian spirit
Was none but a brilliant actress
Who played the part of a saint and then
Psychologically murdered
And assassinated the character
Of her only child
Behind the scenes of the stage
Where no one could see,
No one could hear,
And her act was so sound,
No one could ever believe?
